return to the home page
- Copy MkLinux Booter and Mach Kernal to the Extensions folder of the System Folder.
- Copy the MkLinux control panel to the Control Panels folder of the System Folder.
- Copy lilo.conf and MkLinux.prefs to the Preferences folder of the System Folder.
- Reboot the computer. At the MkLinux splash screen, select MkLinux.
- The RedHat installer is now engaged, assuming the DR3 CD is in the drive.
- There are no screenshots here for the RedHat installer, but the following brief descriptions will be more than enough if it is working correctly. A brief descriptive title of the particular option is given, along with the suggested response:
- welcome: OK
- keyboard: us
- install media: local cd-rom: OK
- insert cd: OK (repeat if error - it takes moment to mount)
- initializing cd-rom...
- installation path: install
- partition drive: select /dev/sda - SCSI ID2 Quantum drive...
- root file system: /dev/sda4
- Mount the other partitions (set mount points):
- /dev/sda4 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 mount point = / (already entered)
- /dev/sda6 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 mount point = /usr
- swap partition: /dev/sda5
- format partitions - select /dev/sda4 and /dev/sda6
- what to install: With limited disk space, be careful what you select.
I put a star by everything except
- DOS/Windows connectivity
- print server
- News Server
- NFS Server
- Note: your choices may vary.
- Note: if you get a message about unresolved dependencies, click through to let the installer fix these.
- install log in /tmp/install.log - OK
- configure mouse: select ADB Mouse and 3-button option.
- Configure Network - if you know in advance what will go here, proceed to set it up; however, for me at the time I was first installing, I understood what all the entries were but I didn't understand what was being done with them. When I had ethernet problems, I found that this blind trust in the installer obscured my deeper understanding of network settings on this computer, and I ended up needing the equivalent of industrial strength Viagra to get my internet connection up. A separate section of this site covers building the network connections step-by-step.
- config timezones
- select hardware clock set to GMT
- timezone = US/Eastern
- OK
- Config startup services. Keep default settings or your use own preferences. Done.
- Config printer. skip for now.
- password
- set root password
- repeat
- OK
- Almost done. You will get a reminder of how to modify your lilo.conf file.
In the case described on this page the modification is to add rootdev=/dev/sda4 and comment out rootdev=/dev/scd0
- reboot the computer into MacOS and change the lilo.conf file in the Preferences folder as directed.
- reboot the computer again
at the MkLinux splash screen, select MkLinux
your computer should now be booting into MkLinux from the external SCSI
congratulations
your journey has begun
